We have booked all three groups sites at Luna Lake Campground, and are looking forward to seeing everyone there for another great weekend with all our friends from the air!
General Info:
Where: | Luna Lake Group Campground, group site area (we’ve reserved all of them) in Alpine, Arizona. Alpine is about 10 minutes past the Arizona/New Mexico border. For Directions: Google Maps For Event Information: Event Map |
When: | Friday June 23 to Monday June 26, 2023. Check-in and Check-out is at 2PM. This weekend coincides with the ARRL Field Day – so if you need an excuse to haul some gear into the field to play radio; this is it! |
Weather: | Hard to say for sure; but the average high temp during the day for June is around 77°F. Monsoons usually don’t quite make it in yet in June; however they could still occur – so plan accordingly. |
Who: | Anyone with an interest in the SWCRS who would like to hang out with a bunch of familiar voices (and faces) can attend. |
Cost: | $45 per family/party/spot. This is just to cover our costs reserving the group sites, any leftover funds will be a 50/50 benefit between the SWCRS Arizona and New Mexico operation funds. Payment is up front via PayPal – we’ll follow up with you after registration (see below). As this is in exchange for goods and/or services; the payment is not tax-deductible. You may cancel at any time up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. |
Equipment: | Motor homes, travel trailers and tents can all be accommodated. Per the USFS – the limitation on vehicle length is 99 feet…. so unless you’re taking your private Boeing 737 your stuff should fit. There are no hookups of any sorts for RV’s |
Provisions: | 1. We’re only providing access to the camping spot; you are responsible for any other necessities you need, bring your own food, drinks, and camping equipment – vault toilets and water are available on site. 2. We’ll be organizing a few group events as well; you are not required to attend or participate in these – they’re just for a bit of fun. |
Travel Time: | From Tucson – about 4 hours and 30 minutes From Albuquerque – about 3 hours and 45 minutes |
Other Things: | 1. Attendance is solely at your own risk. In exchange for being permitted to attend in any capacity, we require all attendants sign liability waiver; we’ll get you squared away when you arrive on site and you can review a sample waiver in the registration form. If you are bringing any minors outside of your own family; their parents or guardians will need to provide a signed waiver. 2. Not the camping type? There are several hotels and motels located close by in the town of Alpine. See below. |
What’s there to do?
Alpine itself is a small, pine forested town in Northeastern Arizona and is about 10 minutes away from camp. Services available include fuel and automotive repair, a small grocery store, a handful of restaurants and bars, a few bait and tackle shops, and a handful of outdoor recreational outfitters.
A few Local recreational activities include:
- Off-Road Travel & Exploration
- Three Forks
- Black Canyon River
- Really just go drive anywhere and take a fork off the main stretch and go get lost.
- Hunting & Fishing
- Luna Lake is within walking distance from camp and is regularly stocked with Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Brook Trout, and hosts a healthy dose of Crawdads / Crawfish if you’re so inclined.
- Other lakes nearby: Hulsey Lake, Nutrioso Reservoir, Lake Sierra Blanca, Big Lake.
- Hiking & Mountain Biking
- A healthy dose of trails immediately near the campsite and throughout the area
- Scenic Drives
- US Highway 191 through Hannigan Meadows, be sure to stop by Blue Vista
- US Highway 180 passes through Luna NM and provides many turnoffs and dirt roads to explore

If camping isn’t your thing, you might also consider the following overnight accommodations in the area, and attend during the day; if you are staying at one of these establishments there are no dues to attend, we just require a waiver.
